No, that's not one of our on-the-water instructors. But this little girl has been sailing since she was smaller than this! She is a few years older now. If you wait too many more years to sign up for sailing lessons, she could be your instructor. But why wait? If she can learn to sail, so can you!

Each student is required to provide their own PFD (lifejacket) unless other arrangements are made with the instructor. For certification, students are required to demonstrate their ability to swim 25 yards without floatation equipment and tread water for 5 minutes before donning their PFD in the water. Appropriate attire for the weekend sessions will be discussed at the first class meeting.

Tuesday classes meet 7-10 pm at the Park Hill School District Community Education Center on Barry Road a short distance west of I29. Weekend classes meet at Sailboat Cove at Smithville Lake near Paradise, MO, from 9 am to 3 pm. Students should bring a lunch for the weekend classes on the lake.

Upon completion of the course, students will have a good working knowledge of basic sailing terminology as applied to small sailboat handling, the physical principles of sailing, right of way rules, the impact of weather on sailing, and competent, safe sailboat operation. At the conclusion of the class, students must complete both a written and an on-the-water test, where each student must maneuver a small sailboat over a predefined course with the aid of one other person. An certificate of completion will be award upon successful completion of the course requirements.
